When you wipe it off with a rag it will take the coating of sticky stain with it. Anytime i have let my stain harden on top of the wood it turned sticky and uneven and rubbed off easily. The remaining stain will come off. I used the miniwax gel stain never again on totally stripped wood cabinets so i was using it as a true stain not as a paint over another finish.

Take a dry rag after 24 hours and wipe down the surface. It penetrates the grain of the wood to promote uniform acceptance of stain.
